Stanley Kubrick Spotlight at the NFSA
Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia
Fri, Nov 7, 2025 — Sat, Nov 22, 2025 (Australia/Sydney)
The NFSA's Stanley Kubrick Spotlight presents three of the director's most celebrated works, each screening in Arc Cinema this November. See A Clockwork Orange (1971) on 35mm — a provocative adaptation of Anthony Burgess' novel in which Malcolm McDowell's sadistic gang leader endures state-enforced "rehabilitation." Set to classical music by Rossini and Beethoven, it remains a deeply thought-provoking dystopian tale. Then enjoy, Barry Lyndon (1975) screening on 35mm — a visually sumptuous 18th-century epic following a poor Irishman's rise and fall in aristocratic society. Adapted from William Thackeray's novel, it's lauded for its beauty, humour, and razor-sharp social commentary. Finally, experience 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) in stunning DCP — Kubrick's groundbreaking sci-fi masterpiece co-written with Arthur C. Clarke. From the "Dawn of Man" to the far reaches of space, its meticulous scientific vision, striking visual compositions, and pioneering special effects continue to captivate audiences nearly six decades later. All films are available individually or as part of a three-film Stanley Kubrick Spotlight pass, offering the chance to experience this extraordinary cinematic range — from dystopian social critique to historical drama and visionary science fiction — on the big screen, as Kubrick intended.
